Ben & Jerry's Topped Tiramisu
Ben & Jerry's Topped Tiramisu is labeled as "Mascarpone Ice Cream with Fudge Swirls & Shortbread Pieces Topped with Espresso Fudge Chunks & Chocolatey Ganache" It's an ice cream sundae in a pint! Ben & Jerry's Topped flavors feature a spoonable chocolatey topping that's extra euphoric. Topped ice cream first made its debut in the UK and Europe in 2017, and finally have made their way to the states in 2021.
Mascarpone is used in many Italian desserts that contain coffee or chocolate. The light, creamy, and buttery texture comes from the mild butterfat content (up to 75 percent), which is why it is used as a filling for the actual cannoli pastry. or used as a filling for real cannoli's. It is cream cheese.Ben & Jerry's base is not super premium, but packs enough flavor to hold its ground for a decent grocery ice cream. My only gripe was the base needs to be denser and provide more flavor.
The chocolate ganache topping resembles a cracking shell similar to what you would find the magnum ice cream pints. The chocolate flavor is bitter out of the get go, but has a nice milk chocolate aftertaste that meshes well with the lighter ice cream. The fudge swirls are consistent from top to bottom, and really enhance as you dig deeper with each spoonful. The fudge has a mild brownie batter resemblance with how rich the flavor is. The best part of the pint is the shortbread pieces. These pieces pack a soft chewy texture and a beautiful vanilla flavor. I did not find many fudge chunks throughout the pint, but quality control can be hit or miss with mass produced grocery pints.
Overall this was a good experience for my first time with the topped line that has got rave from the overseas ice cream fans. I find the shell is unique, but would be better if it was dispersed throughout the experience. The replicate of a tiramisu was very well executed for Ben & Jerry's and I would suggest grabbing this one off the topped line.
