Caffe Panna Brightland
CaffePanna's goal is to bring that same welcoming spirit and all-day accessibility to the heart of New York City, with an emphasis on delicious ice cream that marries elements of both Italian and American traditions.
Brightland is labeled "Smooth olive oil ice cream made with Brightland heirloom Frantoio olive oil with a hint of lemon and Italian wild berries, plus swirls of lemon curd to bring out the fruitiness. Try the graham crunch on top of this one, or scoop it on top of a bowl of berries."
Olive oil is a unique idea for an ice cream base. Olive oil was also seen in Panna Job from a previous pack, so I knew what I was getting myself into. The olive oil has a buttery feel to it, which helps enhance the creamy and dense base ice cream. You would expect the olive oil to take away from the sheer flavor of Caffe Panna's flagship ice cream, but it plays hand in hand with what else is included.
The graham crunch is a Caffe Panna special. The combination of butter, sugar, graham crackers and salt is all that is needed to make this masterpiece. The extra hint of salt from the graham crunch amplifies the lemon curb swirl to make it stand out even more. The only downside was there was next to none in this experience.
I am not the largest lemon fan, but its flavor and zest are not overpowering. It does enhance what the olive oil base already brings to the table. The Italian berries seemed to be folded into the base because all I found was the swirl and the base. It was hard to tell and pick these up
While olive oil and ice cream is not my first choice the combination Caffe Panna went for works here. Granted this won't be one I reach for, but every once in a while a good change of pace never hurts. I love the creativity Caffe Panna puts into their flavors making me go into each and every pint with an open mind.
