Graeter's Birthday Cake
Graeter's Birthday Cake is labeled as "A celebratory blend of cake pieces and sprinkles in cake batter ice cream." This flavor is made in the 150th birthday celebration of the brand. Graeter's thrives off execution with the french pot process and the description matches what the company brings to the table. When Graeter's does limited edition flavors they are extremely popular, and I have a feeling this will be another classic to add to the line-up.
The Cake Batter ice cream is immediately much improved over the basic vanilla ice cream offered by Graeter's. You get a strong luscious vanilla, and extra pureness of cake batter in each bite. Think about buttercream frosting folded into vanilla ice cream. It’s really smooth, really tasty, and avoids coming off as too sweet. While the density and flavor is an upgrade, this cake batter base is one of the finest I have scooped. Just like with the bonus flavors, Graeter's continues to come out with new unrefined bases that continue to strike gold.
The cake pieces are dense, moist, and pack a melt in your mouth consistency. At first I was uncertain how this would execute in the french pot process, but they came out spectacular. What I admire is how they keep the fresh taste to them even frozen inside of ice cream. You can tell Graeter's did their homework before producing this flavor and using a new mix-in with their ice cream. The sprinkles are everywhere. Their biggest benefit is to texture, but there’s enough to affect the flavor as well. They add a welcomed crunch and that familiar, powdery sugar flavor that everyone likes even though sprinkles aren’t that tasty if we’re being honest.
As expected while the flavor looks simple on paper the brand continued to deliver. The cake batter base is one of the best I have ever scooped, and there are plentiful amount of mix-ins. This flavor is releasing on July 1st, 2020, but I do not know how long it will be around for. Hopefully if the demand is large and the response is good Graeter's will bring it on full-time. You will be able to get this in scoop shops and online ordering from the brand. I found mine at Giant Eagle, but have also heard it is at Fresh Market. I would expect this to be in local Kroger's if you are around the Ohio area.
