Mystic Brownie (Vegan)
Mystic Brownie is labeled as "Candied Malt, Basil & Hops gluten-free dark chocolate brownie, coconut cream base, fresh basil, and vegan fudge swirl". I have not ventured into too many vegan flavors from Clementines, but I am a sucker for brownies. The addition of basil is something not seen in the ice cream industry, so I am really intrigued by how powerful that mix-in plays to the big picture.
The Base of Mystic Brownie contains a mixture of Basil and Malt. The original Clementine's base is used with coconut cream to make it a vegan option. The density is much thicker than you may be used to if you only scoop their original flavors, but the coconut is subtle in flavoring making it enjoyable. The basil is present, but not overpowering. The anise taste has a pungent peppery taste that congeals well with the vegan ice cream to make it distinctive.
There are not many options on Clementine's line-up that include swirls, but the one in this option was massive. From top to bottom this swirled in pools from side to side with a rich and luscious amount of flavor. The combination of the chewy and soft vegan brownies with the fudge swirl provided a match made in heaven. The further you scooped into the pint the thicker the mix-ins got. The buttery and bold cocoa flavor from both the swirl and brownies truly overpower the base ice cream, but with how many mix-ins I got that comes as no surprise.
I am not one to grab for vegan ice cream as I can tolerate dairy, but this is a must get while it is on the lineup. The execution with rare inclusion of basil in ice cream is phenomenal. The number of brownies and swirl makes this a fantastic flavor and one I would not hesitate to grab again.
