Ben & Jerry's Cannoli
Ben & Jerry's Cannoli is labeled as "Mascarpone Ice Cream with Fudge-Covered Pastry Shell Pieces & Mascarpone Swirls". Ben & Jerry's have re-released fan favorites to start 2020, and this was one of them. Last seen in 2012 Cannoli has made a comeback due to demand from the consumers. I could not recall my true thoughts on this flavor when I had it in the past, so as I saw it in the store I wanted to give it a whirl. Cannoli's are one of my all-time favorite desserts, so I want to see how the brand replicated this pastry into a frozen dessert.
Mascarpone is used in many Italian desserts that contain coffee or chocolate. The rich, buttery texture comes from the high butterfat content (up to 75 percent), which is why it is used as a filling for the actual cannoli pastry. or used as a filling for real cannoli's. It is a cream cheese It is also seen in Tiramisu, since the ingredient is used in many Italian coffee and chocolate desserts. The base Mascarpone Ice Cream is creamy, light, and subtle in flavor. When digging into the pint the flavoring is a hybrid of a sweet cream and cheesecake base that we have seen many times on Ben & Jerry's line. As someone who has grown up in an Italian family I was hoping for this to deliver more a punch, but I never found the strength of the base to shine through.
The mix-ins contain a Mascarpone Swirl and Fudge-Covered Pastry Shell Pieces. To be honest I am having a very hard time trying to find the difference between the swirl and the base. To me the swirl is just enhancing more to the ice cream and enhancing the semi cheesecake and sweet-cream mixture. Even without mascarpone in the ingredient list the brand was trying to distinguish the actual flavoring of the filling without using the real thing. The shell pieces are the best part of the pint, but they are very scarce. Throughout the experience I ran into three of them. While they do provide a great crunch, they are nothing more then enhanced fudge flakes with a bit more bite.
Needless to say the cannoli experience is a letdown and personally the weakest of the fan favorites that have come back. My opinion may be biased growing up in an Italian family, but I felt this could of had a lot more potential. If you want to grab it for the experience you sure can, but I find it will be a one and done situation for many who get a chance to scoop it. The base needs to have more density, and the mix-ins need to provide more assistance to improve the overall big picture of replicating the dessert.
