CaffePanna Sage Straciatella
Caffè Panna is inspired by the cafes and gelato shops of Rome, which are a ubiquitous part of daily life in the eternal city and serve everyone from Bambini to nonnas. CaffePanna's goal is to bring that same welcoming spirit and all-day accessibility to the heart of New York City, with an emphasis on delicious ice cream that marries elements of both Italian and American traditions. Every Day CaffePanna offers five staple flavors, and five chosen by the kitchen at the particular moment. The menu is always varying, which makes the shop incredibly unique and a must-stop in New York City.
Sage Straciatella is labeled as "Sage Ice Cream with Amano Chocolate Shards"
This herb, native to the Mediterranean, is sweet and somewhat bitter, with a pine-like flavor and aroma. It's also often described as having eucalyptus and citrus notes. When scooping this flavor I found this to be neither bitter nor have a large amount of pine flavor. It lingered in the aftertaste, but the forefront was a luscious vanilla base with the underlying aspects of Sage. While it is present it should not make you think twice about passing on this as it is incredibly unique.
The Amano Chocolate Shards is a collaboration CaffePanna does. Amano Chocolate is found in Chuao on the Caribbean coast of Venezuela. This little village has been producing some of the world's finest cocoa for over 400 years. The richness and bitterness of the dark chocolate are noted, but the amount of flavor it produces is surreal. Even frozen in ice cream it starts to melt in your mouth the second it hits your taste buds.
This flavor is simple on paper but executed incredibly well. CaffePanna can make straightforward basic flavors, but the quality of the ingredients used is what separates them from the pack. I went into this pint thinking halfway through I would be bored but to my surprise, it was much more enjoyable than expected.
