Ample Hills Nectar of the Queens (2019)
Ample Hills Nectar of the Queens is labeled as "smooth honey cinnamon ice cream mixed with baklava and galaktoboureko from Astoria’s own Artopolis Bakery." By partnering with a local bakery just down the street, Ample Hills is proud to showcase authentic Greek pastries in every scoop! Unlike Olympus' mythological ambrosia, our ice cream can't promise eternal life...but it's definitely a taste of eternal youth.I have had one Baklava ice cream in the past, so I am eager to see how AH's version stacks up to the Little G I scooped prior.
The smooth honey cinnamon ice cream is another unrefined base on the Ample Hills line. The ice cream has a rich, golden sweet flavor that blends seamlessly with the high quality dairy for a big, luscious sweet flavor of perfection. The cinnamon notes are subtle but still leave a mark on your tastebuds. Both aspects are dialed in and balanced with a sugary sweetness that leaves a fantastic complimenting pair. My only concern is the amount of honey used was too much as the ice cream tempers extremely fast.
The baklava used in this pint are impressive, and accentuate the flavor of the base with a wonderful chewiness. Galaktoboureko is a traditional Greek dessert made with layers of golden brown crispy phyllo, sprinkled with melted butter, filled with the most creamy custard and bathed in scented syrup. Both mix-ins share similar characteristics being thin, flaky and containing aspects to enhance the base. Personally I got little to no Galaktoboureko in this pint as the Baklava present but incredibly sparse.
I really like the creative spin on this flavor Ample Hills brought to the table in collaboration with Artopolis Bakery, but the biggest downside is how fast the ice cream melted. The lack of mix-ins also played a part in making this an uneventful addition to the taste of New York. Given the brand is churning out tons of pints with machines the mix-in density will vary greatly from what you may get in a hand packed pint.
