Jeni's Gooey Butter Cake
Jeni's Gooey Butter Cake is labeled as "Cream cheese ice cream layered with crumbles of vanilla cake and a swirl of caramel butterscotch sauce." It has been quite some time since I scooped Jeni's because the variety up north is minimal. The last few times I visited the scoop shops in Columbus this was before listeria hit the brand twice. Since the company has made small changes to their ingredient profile on their flavors I am curious how much the flavor has truly changed. Jeni's is known to make a stellar butter cake, so lets see if it stays on top of the mountain among the other giants out there on the ice cream market.
The cream cheese flavor is exactly what you would want out of a dense, and creamy ice cream. The base is incredibly smooth and it has the signature cream cheese tang that has been tempered with the perfect amount of sweetness. The bold initial taste is soon complimented by a sugary enhancement that amplifies the cream to resemble a frosting. Each and every bite is fantastic just like I remember from the last time I had it years ago.
The rich cream cheese ice cream is mixed with crumbles of chewy vanilla cake that tastes fresh out of the oven. The cake crumbles add a nice texture to the smooth ice cream, and add more flavor without making it too sweet. The cake pieces are ample and diverse, with a rich, buttery, slightly floury presence that really flourish against the base. Some of the pieces are crunchy with a caramelized caramel exterior that give way to a softer cake interior. This flavor is topped off with swirls of sweet caramel butterscotch sauce. The sauce adds a everlasting sweet and nutty flavor to the ice cream and works together perfectly. I did not pick up much swirl throughout my experience, but when you strike gold it leaves a mark on your tastebuds.
Jeni's Butter Cake is easily the best grocery store butter cake ice cream you can buy. Not only is the base stellar, but the cake pieces are moist and delicious. With a little bit more swirl in my experience this would make it a contender vs Clementines and Ample Hills as my all-time favorite. If you are a fan of butter cake this is a must get if you can find it in stores, or live close to a scoop shop. The worst case scenario you can always add it onto an order online when rounding out your purchase.
