Graeter's Stout & Pretzels
Graeter's Stout & Pretzels is labeled as "For the ice cream, the same malt that goes into the Dead Blow brewing process helps create the dark color and background flavor of Stout & Pretzels. By including natural beer flavoring with associated fruity essence, the resulting creation brings to life this popular craft beer flavor. We’ve paired it with a chocolate covered pretzel piece. These pretzels have been “panned” (a traditional candy-making process which applies uniform coating to small pieces) with chocolate to preserve the freshness and crunch within the ice cream."
Typically I am not one who likes beer or to drink at all. When I first tasted this I barley picked up any of the booze as the dark chocolate really was the dominating flavor. The chocolate was rich, pure, and had no bitterness to it. The brew was such a small aftertaste it was hard to pick up. Luckily that is a huge plus in my book (unless you are a big booze guy). There is just enough of the booze to get that special element, but overall if you love chocolate this base will be a huge hit to you.
The chocolate covered pretzels are an unrefined mix-in to Graeters. At first I had my doubts, but after cracking a few of these they were awesome. The crunch is present, the salt is just right, and the milk chocolate outer coating goes hand in hand with the base. Chocolate covered pretzels are one of my favorite mix-ins for ice cream and Graeters nailed it. I really hope to see more of these new mix-ins over the last year with all the bonus flavors for the future.
All in all this was a flavor I had low hopes going into, but came away in awe. A fantastic base, and the mix-ins were even better. I really have to say this one shocked me, and It delivered as expected. I wish I had access to more of this as I only had a cone while I was visiting Columbus, but if you can grab this online before it is sold out and gone for the year!
