Graeter's Elena's Blueberry Pie
Elena's Blueberry Pie is labeled as "blueberry flavor ice cream loaded with real blueberries and pie crust pieces". The best part about this limited flavor is named after Elena, a young girl who's tragic battle with pediatric brain cancer inspired the creation of The Cure Starts Now Foundation (a 501c3 Federal Non-Profit) and their worldwide effort to discover a "Homerun" cure for cancer.
The last time I had this flavor in 2013 it contained a vanilla base. Graeter's has revamped this limited edition flavor to a blueberry ice cream. Just like the other fruit flavors on the line the density of the base ice cream really shine .A huge problem with fruity flavors on the market is they can taste overbearing and fake. Graeter's found a pure blueberry flavor that leaves a savoring luscious aftertaste. This is right up there with black raspberry off the line as a unique flavor that really will shock you with how well Graeter's nailed the taste.
Graeter's wanted to amplify the base by adding in real blueberries, and a complimenting pie crust pieces as the mix-ins. You can always have your pie and eat it too, but I much prefer it when companies turn desserts and mix them into ice cream. Fruit can freeze and leave icy flavoring when not pureed into a swirl. Luckily Greater's did a great job with the french pot process and found a way to keep the blueberries tasting garden-fresh. The pie crust pieces were flaky and packed a sugary aftertaste. The pieces were more like chunks which were consistency from top to bottom in almost every single bite. After eating a few of them I started to notice a small graham cracker vibe coming off of them as well which was an added bonus.
Overall I gave this flavor a good grade in 2013, but now it is back and better then ever. The upgrade from vanilla to the blueberry base brings out the fresh blueberries and complimenting pie crust pieces to mesh very well together. With how pure all the flavors compliment each other this really put together a total package. This is available for a limited time in Graeter's scoop shops and online ordering.
