Clementine's Salted Crack Caramel
Clementine's Salted Crack Caramel is labeled as "Rich caramel, sea salt, vanilla, and our scratch made cracker candy pieces". If you know I absolutely love Ample Hills Salted Crack Caramel as it is one of their top sellers. Lets see how good Clementine's can do this AH Signature flavor. What may turn some people away from AH is how burnt the caramel flavor is. Based off the description I have a feeling this base will be much different.
The description of rich caramel is exactly that. Have you ever cracked into a Ghirardelli Chocolate square with a caramel filling? That is exactly what this base provides. The density of the ice cream continues to shine to a similar structure of custard. The hints of sea salt are not very strong, but you get small hints in the aftertaste. The sweetness and richness of the caramel reminds me of eating a swirl from other brands all mixed into a grass fed and organic based ice cream with 18% buttermilk fat.
The Salted Crack Cookies are Ample Hills signature mix in, but I have to admit Clementines did a fantastic job on making their own. These pieces are large and in charge. Crack Cookies are saltine based crackers coated with butter and sugar. When you combine the sweet caramel flavor you also get the salty crack cookie which is a perfect combination for those who love the sweet and salty combo. Most of the crack cookies were right on top just like my experience with Toffee Butter Brickle. The consistency of the mix-ins seems to be an issue with my luck on Clementines so far. They start strong on the base, and fade as you get further down the experience.
This salted caramel base was absolute fire. I have to say Clementines is no joke when it comes to making high quality ice cream. Not only is the texture extremely thick, but the flavor is nothing like I have ever experienced before. The crack cookies were salty, crunchy, and packed a buttery aftertaste just like you would expect. Beggars can't be choosers, but if this pint packed a bit more of those mix-ins this would be the home run.
Ample Hills may have the better consistency with the crack cookies & the added chocolate coating, but Clementine's has the superior ice cream base.
