Little G's Ice Cream Sweet Potato Casserole
Little G's Ice Cream Sweet Potato Casserole is labeled as "Spiced sweet potato ice cream with candied pecans and a toasted marshmallow swirl." The real question is how well this stacks up to the Salt & Straw version which was my favorite pint of 2016.
The spiced sweet potato ice cream is fantastic, but lets compare some notes from the S&S version. This base has a minor sweet potato flavor that is overpowered by the spices. Hence the Spiced Sweet potato ice cream that is loaded with nutmeg and clove to give it a well rounded flavor. This almost reminded me of Handel's Pumpkin ripple with how strong the spices were in each and every bite. While I am not complaining the sweet potato flavor is the undertone here which should take priority. Overall its well done, I really enjoy it, and love how strong the spices help enhance the sweet potato base.
Just like in pecan pie the candied pecans are spectacular. The dense and sugary pecan pieces are loaded from top to bottom. The best part is how thick and dense they are. These are legit full size pecans, not the little shards you got in the salt & straw version. Grace gets the edge in the candied pecans, but she loses points in her swirl. In some of her pints the swirl is massive, and in some pints it is nearly not noticeable. While in Salt & Straw's it was laced from top to bottom and swirled along the sides. Little G's just had a shadow at the top of my pint and a bit towards the bottom. The marshmallow swirl packed a very sweet aftertaste that helped go hand in hand with the spiced sweet potato base. Since there was not a whole lot of the swirl it was hard to compare to Salt & Straw's which dominated the pint.
While this was very well executed I want to highlight some notes compared to Salt & Straw's replica.
Salt & Straw Wins:
- Stronger Sweet Potato Flavor in the base
- Much larger Marshmallow Swirl
Little G's Win:
- Many more Candied Pecans
- Stronger Nutmeg/Clove spices in the base
Overall Salt & Straw edges out Little G's because of a stronger sweet potato flavor, and having a swirl that is consistent from top to bottom. Both are fantastic and you cannot go wrong with either.
