Little G's Ice Cream Pecan Pie
Little G's Ice Cream Pecan Pie is labeled as "Vanilla bean ice cream with pecan pie chunks." While basic on paper, this flavor got a ton of positive reviews. Lets see how good this is, because I have only had a select amount of pecan or pecan pie based ice creams in my lifetime.
First of all the vanilla bean ice cream is exactly what you would think. Ever drink a vanilla bean coffee creamer? Yeah that is exactly what Little G's brings to the table. The base is not super sweet or luscious like a Graeter's ice cream, but has a dense vanilla flavor. For those who like a strong vanilla and not sweet this is right up your alley. Besides breaching the surface and getting ice cream you are then loaded with nothing but mix-ins. I would put it up there as a good base, not great. Due to the amount of Pie & Pecans included in the pint it takes away from tasting the base and the overall experience of the vanilla bean flavor.
The real star of the show is the candied pecans and pecan pie chunks. These are not just pieces of pie crusts, these are legit chunks. Think about taking a pecan pie and chopping it up and then mixing it into vanilla ice cream. How Grace can continue to put mix-ins of good quality and keep them great even when frozen in ice cream is unreal. You get the aftertaste of a butter pie crust, and hints of molasses that are laced throughout a pecan pie. The pieces of the candied pecans have that perfect sugary aftertaste with a nice bite to everyone of them you get throughout the experience. These are not little pieces of pecans like you may find in Salt & Straw's Sweet potato flavor, but these are full size nuts. They taste delicious and compliment the pie crust perfectly to form a pecan pie in ice cream form.
The pictures do not lie this one was loaded and it was a great way to replicate a dessert in ice cream fashion. For someone who has never had a great pecan pie from a bakery this was a hell of a job throwing it together in a pint. With a slight upgrade in the base this would put it as a top tier flavor off her entire line. There is nothing bad to say about the pie chunks or the candied pecans as tasted delicious and packed tons of flavor. Sad to see this one gone for a limited time, but hopefully for those who did not get it they will have a chance next year.
