Salt & Straw Foie Gras Oatmeal Raisin Cream Pie
Salt & Straw Foie Gras Oatmeal Raisin Cream Pie is labeled as " our housemade oatmeal raisin cookie recipe leveled up with rendered foie gras in place of butter. After the cookies are baked, we fill them—whoopie pie-style—with foie gras cream frosting and stir them by the handful into salted vanilla ice cream. Finished with a whirl of candied raisin coulis." For folks that dreamed of seeing Oatmeal Cookie Chunk come back from the graveyard you may be in for a treat. Its not often you see Oatmeal Cream ice creams on the market. For this being one of my favorite cookies my expectations were extremely high.
Salt & Straw's vanilla base is still nothing to write off. Salt & Straw is known for premium ice cream, very high quality, and making everything in house. The pure richness and luscious flavor of the vanilla is one of the best on the market. The pure sweetness of the vanilla is on point, and leaves the option of throwing anything in a pint to make it a fantastic experience. The vanilla is enhanced by the foie gras cream frosting that blends from the oatmeal raisin cookies and gives it a richer buttery aftertaste. This base alone is fire.
Just when I thought the base was good on its own this pint just gets better in every bite. First of all the oatmeal raisin cookies are big chunks just like my experience with the elvis cookie dough. Due to everything being made in house from S&S the quality is top notch. Very soft, chewy, and melt in your mouth with each bite. The frosting or filling of the cookies is hard to detect as it carries into the ice cream base to amplify the buttery richness of the luscious vanilla flavor. The star of the show is hands down the swirl of the candied raisin coulis. This is absolutely bonkers. The sweetness of the raisin is amplified with a sugary swirl and you even get the aftertaste of the oatmeal raising cookie. I don't know how Salt & Straw did this, but it could be the best swirl they have ever offered in any of their pints I have consumed. It turns more into a pudding towards the bottom as I was eating chunks of the swirl which was mind blowing good.
If you have ever had Oatmeal Cookie Chunk from Ben & Jerry's before it hit the graveyard, imagine that upgraded with a ridiculous swirl and a better base. There is nothing bad to say about this pint, in fact this is a top 3 flavor ever off their line in my opinion. Not only is the base top notch, everything about the mix-ins meshed exactly as you would expect. Anyone who enjoys oatmeal raisin cookies must get their hands on this, and I would get at least 2-3 pints off this month before it goes away.
