Salt & Straw Gingerbread Cookie Dough
Salt & Straw Gingerbread Cookie Dough is labeled as "After making our family recipe for gingerbread cookie batter (hint, we use TONS of molasses) we fold in the batter of tasty-ness one spoonful at a time. For the ice cream itself, we channeled the “hard sauce” that goes on top of the cookies, making it slightly cloying and extra spicy."
The one thing that threw me off a bit was a white smear on the top of the surface of the ice cream. The initial layer is brown and as you dig down a few spoonfuls the ice cream turns back to white. The topping is heavy with the gingerbread spices, and has hints of molasses which really enhance the experience. After a few bites you get into the well known vanilla flavored salt & straw ice cream. This is where you also start to see the chunks of cookie dough start coming into play. I found this very unique how Salt & Straw made a top gingerbread layering (gingerbread cookie batter in the description) that was loaded with flavor. The combination of molasses, gingerbread, and cinnamon was awesome. It is not everyday you get a different surface to the regular ice cream. Salt & Straw thinking outside the box as usual.
The cookie dough is exactly what you would expect. If you know me I rate Handel's Cooke Dough one of the best on the market. Salt & Straw took a very similar approach with how thick, dense, and rich the cookie dough mix-ins were involved in this pint. The best part is even with a small hint of nutmeg & molasses it enhances the experience. These mix-ins were not shy in flavor, and were consistent in every few spoonfuls. These were not little chunks, these were balls laced from top to bottom after the initial layering. The chewiness was comparable to rolling a ball of fresh cookie dough right out of the grocery store cookie packs. If you love cookie dough, Salt & Straw does not let you down with the mix-ins in this one. I was very pleased with how well they came out considering how highly I rated handels this is right up there with the size, amount, and flavor of Handel's which are in house and homemade (just like S&S).
Quality ingredients, a nice spin on a gingerbread initial layering, and tons of mix-ins made this an enjoyable experience. This was my first experience with a "Gingerbread" ice cream, and it will not be my last. Being someone who enjoys molasses, nutmeg, and cinnamon in desserts this one struck gold. I was thrown off by the initial white smear at the top of the surface, but once you dig in, its tough to stop until the whole pint is gone. As you dig through the cookie dough mix-ins and delicious ice cream you are in for a perfect seasonal treat. If you missed out on this flavor make sure you get it next year!
