Salt & Straw Apple Brandy & Pecan Pie
Salt & Straw Apple Brandy & Pecan Pie is labeled as " In our kitchen, we bake pecan pie filling into cookie-like, dreamy squares of deliciousness; perfecting the perfect pie filling-to-crust ratio that always leans towards extra filling. For the base of the ice cream we’re using barrel-aged Apple Brandies from Clear Creek Distillery in our Portland flavor and St. George California Reserve in our LA flavor." I have never had an Apple Pie base before, and I am not a big pie person in general. Either way I know one things the quality from S&S usually never lets me down. This one could be interesting.
First bite was very good, let alone full of apple flavor. The flavor reminded me of eating apple preserves you would scoop out of a canned jar in a grocery store. The only thing different is the ice cream base is very dense, thick, and packs a very hard consistency. This is how you know Salt & Straw is packing a very high butterfat milk content in their product. Not only was the flavor rich, the luscious aftertaste of cinnamon is present in each and every bite even though it is not very strong. The hint of brandy is almost hit or miss. A lot of alcoholic ice creams seem to not be very strong in this department, but for a lot of people who may eat this closer to bed that is probably for a good cause!
Onto the Pecan pie pieces involved in this ice cream. You know it will be a good pint when chunks are present right on top of the surface before you even dig in. Not only that but the amount of filling and crust in each and every mix in is thick. I have never had a Pecan Pie before, but after having a few bites in this ice cream I was shocked at how much flavor and density it brought to the experience in this pint. The filling is very rich, holds a crunchy compliment and has a goo-like filling that provides an incredible experience combined with an apple base. The amount of sweetness from the apple brandy base and boldness of the pecan pie are a great 1-2 combo that leaves you lingering for another bite. I have to say the amount of chunks of pecan pie filling and crust I got was in each and every bite. You know Salt & Straw when it comes to consistency. This is just another trademark on their line!
Overall this was a very new experience for myself. First time having pecan pie in an ice cream, and indulging in an apple pie based ice cream. Both flavors go hand in hand, and the mix-ins were full of flavor. I really don't have a lot of bad things to say except the amount of brandy was a miss. For some people that will be awesome (especially myself not a drinker), but for those looking to get a good dose they will be upset. I personally enjoyed the mix-ins over the quality of the ice cream in this one as the thickness, crunchiess, and texture really made them stick out above the superb base.
