Salt & Straw Sweet Potato Casserole with Maple Pecans
Salt & Straw Sweet Potato Casserole with Maple Pecans is labeled as "Dig your spoon into rich, full-bodied sweet potato ice cream, balanced by an unbelievably light ribbon of mouth-watering maple syrup marshmallow fluff & homemade candied pecans." On paper it is a very basic description that replicates a holiday favorite dessert. Being this is such a unique flavor and sweet potato is not seen as an ice cream base. After seeing reviews of this for over 2 years now I had to pull the trigger and give this one a whirl. Since I am a major fan of candied pecans (due to the cinnamon sugar) and love sweet potatoes I have a feeling I will not be let down.
I will say after a few bites the base is legit sweet potato puree. Salt & Straw continues to impress me with how well they flavor their ice cream. You do pay a pretty penny to get premium ice cream, and the consistency, texture, and flavor is top of the line. How they were able to replicate the exact flavor of a sweet potato in perfect ice cream form is beyond me. Easily alone the base is superb if you like sweet potatoes. They did decide to one up this flavor by provides the two perfect compliments in a marshmallow swirl and candied pecans.
Everyone knows that sweet potato casserole is not complete without loads of sugar (marshmallows) and candied pecans for added flavor. If you have had the Rocky Road pint you know exactly what the marshmallow swirl entails. Just like my experience with PB&J last week, this is nothing short of crazy when it comes to the marshmallow swirl. While the marshmallow is not "fluffy" in texture the hardness goes well with the sweet potato base and the crunchiness the candied pecans offer. Not only that the combination is a perfect example of a holiday favorite on the dinner table. Tons of sweet cinnamon sugar from the pecans, you get the luscious marshmallow flavor, and the dense sweet potato base. The tri-fecta is complete and the swirls and pecans are loaded from top to bottom as you would expect from Salt & Straw.
What else can I say? Do you like Sweet Potato Casserole? If you do then you get everything you dreamed of thrown into a pint of ice cream. From the base to the mix-ins I have 0 complaints about this one. The only thing that may turn you off may be the sweetness of the candied pecans and marshmallow if you are not fans of either. Besides that nothing bad to say Salt & Straw covered their bases in this one. Another 10/10 flavor off the line as the November pack was loaded with great flavors. This is easily one of the best ice creams I have ever had EVER. My favorite flavor off this line hands down.
