Lake Effect Couch Potato
Lake Effect Couch Potato is labeled as "Our rich vanilla ice cream with swirls of caramel and peanut butter packed with chocolate covered potato chips from our friends at Platter’s chocolate." Lake Effect being a buffalo exclusive did not steer me wrong with Paula's Glazed Donut. While I have never had a chocolate covered potato chip ice cream I have heard great things (especially from Salt & Straw Fans). Combining some of my favorite things (caramel & peanut butter) the clear containers showed a lot of promise with the swirls (like looking at Talenti pints). Lets see how good this flavor is from Lake Effect.
Vanilla ice cream can be hit or miss from companies. Lake Effect vanilla ice cream is actually pretty darn good. I would give it an edge over Ben & Jerry's, but nothing top tier like Salt & Straw, Ample Hills, or my favorite vanilla in Graeter's. Those 3 companies have the edge with a sugary and luscious vanilla aftertaste. The vanilla base in this pint is very overshadowed with the swirls contained in each and every bite. While there are some cases where you get just the base (and no mix-ins or swirls) it packs a good punch and is premium ice cream. The base is dense and contains a strong amount of flavor.
While looking at the clear container you could visually see large swirls of caramel and peanut butter. Similar to a Steve's or Talenti container when you buy them in the stores. After digging in a few bites I got my first bite of a chocolate covered potato chip. The chips had a nice crunch, quality chocolate coating that has a Hershey chocolate bar resemblance, but was a touch soggy on the inside. Granted you are freezing potato chips in ice cream, so the quality will diminish. I have to admit the potato chip (Saltiness) goes very well with the sweet caramel flavoring and bold peanut butter packed in the swirls. While the swirls are not gigantic like Turkey Hill, they have a presence in almost every spoonful. The downfall here was the amount of potato chips which were minimal. I would of loved to see more, but I really only got a handful.
Overall I love the concept of this pint. A basic vanilla ice cream that was done well by Lake Effect. The swirls could of been larger, but Lake Effect threw two of them in this pint. Their idea in my opinion was not to have one overpower the other. Instead they were looking to have each compliment the base and mix-ins. The chocolate covered potato chips were delicious, but scarce throughout the pint. If the swirls were a bit stronger and there were more chocolate covered potato chips (what I was most interested in) this would of got a better grade. Good, but not great!
Grade: C+
