Graeter's S'mores
Graeter's S'mores is labeled as "Marshmallow ice cream, with signature chocolate chips, and graham crackers". This limited edition flavor sold out in under one week when it launched on 4th of July. Unfortunately I do not live anywhere near the scoop shops, and I had to order a few of these pints online to give them a crack. Anything that involves signature chocolate chips from Graeter's you already know packs thick, tight, and solid mix-ins. The marshmallow base will be interesting because Graeter's does vanilla ice cream very well. The cheese crown flavor (cheesecake flavored ice cream), and all of their other vanilla bases have been superb. The real question is can they pull off this seasonal dessert in ice cream fashion? Let us find out.
Before I dig into this review I Just want to recap some of the previous s'mores ice cream I have had and how I rank them.
1) Wegmans --> "Marshmallow Ice Cream, Marshmallow Swirls, Graham Cracker Swirls, and Chocolate Pieces"
2) 7/11 S'mores --> "Graham cracker flavored ice cream loaded with chocoaltey chunks and swirls of marshmallow and fudge"
3) Handel's --> "A Graham Cracker ice cream with mini marshmallows and chocolate chunks."
4) Dairy Queen S'mores Blizzard -> Vanilla soft serve + Chocolate + Graham Crackers
5) Gelato Fiasco --> "Chocolate Bar Pieces and house-made marshmallows are kindled into graham cracker gelato"
6) Ben & Jerry's S'mores --> "chocolate ice cream with fudge chunks, toasted marshmallow & graham cracker swirls"
When you dig into the marshmallow ice cream of Graeter's it is everything you would imagine it to be. This base is not far off of what Wegmans provides. The ice cream is rich, sweet, and packs a dense marshmallow taste. This is not as "Sweet" as Wegmans, but provides a bolder marshmallow flavor. I had a good feeling Graeter's would do very well with this, and they really did make a killer marshmallow base. The opportunities would be endless on what they could provide if they made this a more common ice cream base on their lineup.
My grievance with Graeter's is when they try to add another element with their signature chocolate chips. This can skew the amount of density and mix-ins they provide when adding multiple elements. This has been seen on their cookie dough chocolate chip, and their coconut almond chocolate chip pints from my experience. Right away my first bite packed a thick graham cracker chunk that had a fantastic cinnamon flavored aftertaste. There was edible crunch and thickness in the mix-in element. Next as we all know the signature chocolate chips. While I did not find a massive 1" thick one like I did in buckeye, they are still present. I had some decent sized pieces from top to bottom as the consistency of mix-ins was on point as expected from Graeter's. The milk chocolate melt away chocolate chip pieces compliment the graham cracker and marshmallow ice cream perfectly.
Graeter's took a simple summer dessert and mixed it very well into ice cream. The only take away from some folks may be the ice cream base is too sweet, and there is not enough of either mix-in. Graeter's tried to find a happy medium between all three pieces to the puzzle and did a great job. The graham crackers and chocolate chips meshed well with the sweet base to give each aspect of the S'more in every bite. I personally loved this flavor, and hope they bring it back in the future. I would place this in my top 3 S'mores of all time right up there with Wegmans and 7/11.
