Handel's Buckeye
Handel's Buckeye is labeled " Peanut Butter ice Cream with Chocolate Swirl and Peanut Butter filled Buckeye Pieces". For most ice cream consumers the combination of peanut butter and chocolate usually ends on a good note. Handel's is known as a homemade ice cream company around the PA/OH area that makes everything in house. They also choose to add their own buckeye pieces to the mix. After my last haul from Pittsburgh I had to save the best for last. I have only had this in a bowl before with 2 scoops, but I have to get a full pint in to give it a true rating.
Handel's Peanut Butter base is quite exceptional. From first bite it almost reminded me of Haagen Dazs Peanut Butter Pie. The main difference being a thicker texture of premium ice cream, and a denser peanut butter flavor. If you have ever had Wegmans Nutter Batter the peanut butter swirls and ice cream reminded me of this rich peanut butter flavor . Each bite packed a creamy and delicious peanut butter taste. Some companies establish a peanut butter flavor, but lacks the true density of a premium peanut butter flavor.
The mix-ins in this pint were off the charts. I got well over 20 buckeye pieces througout my pint. Each and every bite was loaded with these chocolate coated buckeye pieces. As you can see in the pictures the inside are filled with a peanut butter and sugar combination. The sweetness of the peanut butter center and the bold chocolate outside made a fantastic combination. Small ribbons of chocolate swirled throughout this pint to enhance the chocolate and peanut butter experience. While the swirls were not large by any means, the amount of buckeye pieces made up for that.
If you have never had a buckeye you need to get to a bakery and grab one instantly. Chocolate and peanut butter lovers will have no second thoughts of revisiting this pint in the future. Handel's took a premium peanut butter ice cream, and was consistent from top to bottom with mix-ins. While the swirl could of been larger, the addition gave you the full chocolate and peanut butter experience of a buckeye. Not one bad thing to say about this one, I would have to rank this up towards the top with Graham Central Station, Caramel Pretzel Crunch, Midnight Madness, Oreo Dough, and Pumpkin as my favorites.
