Jeni's Brambleberry Crisp
After reading countless reviews on this flavor I decided to pick this up on the black friday sale Jeni's had to offer. After going through most of the collection I got this one really appealed to my eye. Usually when it comes to Jeni's I know nothing better than to run right for the dark chocolate as their number one flavor. Will my thoughts change on their vanilla base after this review? time will tell
Jeni's Brambleberry Crisp is labeled as "Buttery, oven-toasted oat streusel and a striking, sweet-tart “brambleberry” jam of blackberries and black currants layered throughout vanilla ice cream." When you read that it may be a mouthful but in essence a nice vanilla base, a mix of blackberries and blackberry jam, with a good oat streusel mixed into it. Something that struck into my mine was Gelato Fiasco's Blueberry Maine which would be similar by subbing the blackberry with the blueberry. If Jeni's with their fantastic ice cream can replicate that in a dense form this would be a home run.
After popping the lid this pint was no joke with mix-ins and swirls. This looked like a Ben & Jerry or Graeters pint at first. Usually you think of Jeni's as a basic pint with a solid base, this one tended to blend a few different jam's, mix-ins, and give you the best of both worlds. I saw a very fine vanilla base, and also a blackberry jam swirl, and also a nice big oat streusel looking chunk right up top. Right away I knew I was in for mix-ins which are one of my favorite things with ice creams.
The base is pure, luscious, and dense for a vanilla flavor. It has a great vanilla flavor and an incredible honey like taste to it (more a honey vanilla) for how sweet and tasty it truly is. As you dig into the pint the blackberry jam and black currants. It tastes like they took blackberries from a farm and pureed them right into this pint that are packed with flavor and sugary goodness. The overall sweet vanilla base with the ripeness of the blackberry jam and currants leave room for the oat streusel. The oat streusel are not little shreds or chunks these are good size pieces like little whoppers (size reference) in some aspects of the pint. The nice crunch aspect the streusel adds on top of the chewy break down provides for a perfect compliment like a granola to finish off this pint. Jeni's combined a very sweet blackberry filling, with an incredible vanilla base, and the perfect streusel compliment to pack a top seller.
