Steve's Salty Caramel Review:
Being out of town I finally had access to a Fresh Market to grab some Steve's. My local whole foods does not stock it because of its size and limited space in their freezer section, thankfully I got 3 free Pint Coupons from Sara over at Steve's! This was the first I am going to crack between Banana Pudding and Cinnamon Coffee (Future Reviews)
After having Sunday Morning I was eager to see what the rest of the Steve's Line-up had to offer. Upon looking at this pint I saw a glaze of caramel through the pint and swirls that were thick and dense looking with a nice looking Caramel Base. The cool thing with Steve's pints is they are see through, and I had a feeling this would not disappoint with a swirl that looks like globs of Caramel. Salty Caramel is described as "A caramel ice Cream with a Sea Salted Caramel Swirl"
Upon lifting the lid You are presented with a dense looking Caramel Base and hints of a Caramel Swirl exactly as described on the label for the pint of ice cream. Before I dug in, I noticed this pint was literally filled to the brim and somewhat overflowing the sides which is always a benefit. My last go about with Sunday morning was barley 3/4th full, and i weighed it out on a scale and found is was off by over a full serving (3 out of the 4 servings) so this was redemption!
Upon first bite I was blown away at the premium caramel ice cream that steve's does offer which started to resemble and surpass Jeni's in taste (for a caramel base). It is so dense and heavy in caramel that you get the huge rush of caramel on first bite, and start to get that nice sweet/salty after taste on the way down which makes it absolutely killer! You are basically getting a huge caramel sugar rush without any artificial flavoring. The natural and high quality ingredient profile from Steve's gives you the exact replica of a true caramel base.
Digging down the pint the caramel base shines, but what really shines is how dense and rich the caramel swirl is. The Sea Salted Caramel Swirl is exactly what separates this pint from the rest of the caramel's out there. Just when i thought 2nd street Kopper Kettle Caramel was divine when it came to the swirl and base Steve's Surpasses it. If Steve's had the truffles like 2nd street did, this could be easily my #1 Caramel based ice cream. Literally the swirl turns into a fresh glaze as you dig down the pint and is melt in your mouth. Its not hard at all it is actually very soft like the middle of a sea salted caramel truffle or biting into a snickers/milky way bar. The overall approach to the sea salted caramelized swirl is so rich that is compliments the base perfectly. As you can see in my last picture the swirl is no joke, it gets to the point where it is globs of caramel instead of a small swirl like you see in the first picture from lifting the lid. If you are a Caramel Fan, look no further. for a simple base and swirl this is off the charts.
