Wegmans Under The Boardwalk
Wegmans has a wide variety of flavors and this one caught my eye being a major fan of 2nd Street Kopper Kettle Caramel, and Talenti Sea Salt Caramel which is very similar in nature. So I was eager to pick this up and scoop it to rate among those flavors and how it compares and differs from the base, taste, and mix-in wise (Truffles) not to mention this has a swirl which 2nd Street contains as well (and Talenti does not).
If you read the carton's description for Under the Boardwalk it contains: "Caramel ice cream with sea salt caramel swirls and caramel truffles". Upon lifting the lid that is exactly what I saw and the small little bits of the caramel swirl were seen on the far left hand side of the pint. Upon picking up my spoon for the first bite I started to notice multiple truffles, and a very light, creamy, and smooth distinct caramel taste.
As i took a few bites I still did not notice much of the caramel swirl, they were more like little smudges or fragments of a swirl that did not add much experience to the overall pint. There were small hints of the texture and taste but nothing to give it a distinct feature as a mix-in on the pint. While i love the caramel swirls especially the one found in 2nd Street Kopper Kettle Caramel wegmans did not live up to the hype in this pint which let me down a bit.
Overall the Pint is great, the base really hits you hard with a great and richful caramel tasting flavor. it is very light and creamy not gelato like (Talenti SSC here), but it has a bolder taste to it being a premium ice cream compared to the talenti SSC which is a lot lighter being a gelato.
The Swirl in 2nd street trumps the one found in the wegmans pint by a large margine and perhaps one of the best caramel swirls I have ever had which is why 2nd street in this comparison will reign supreme. The last feature to include is the truffles. The truffles were very similar in size, texture and taste to that in 2nd street which were outstanding, but they were not as dominant in the Talenti pint. Talenti was an absolute land mind of truffles, 2nd street and Wegmans gave you a good portion in almost every single bite. All the truffles in all 3 pints were fantastic, not rock hard, and gave the pint a perfect compliment. Besides the lack of swirl Wegmans still produced an incredible flavor and pint to rival some of the greats.
Score: A-
