Cloudforest Chocolate Hazelnut Cookies & Cream Vegan
Cloudforest Chocolate Hazelnut Cookies & Cream is labeled as " We start with a vegan chocolate ice cream made with coconut cream and hazelnut butter, swirl in ribbons of Cloudforest chocolate, and add pebble-sized crumbs of our homemade gluten-free and vegan Oreos". Vegan ice creams by nature are incredibly dense due to the makeup of the base. When Salt and Straw decided to throw in Oreos and hazelnut butter (Nutella) my eyes rose. Will this be as good as it sounds?
When popping the lid it is always pleasing to see swirls, mix-ins, and a fine-looking base. I will start off by saying I am not a huge coconut fan, but Salt Straw can really mask that during this experience. The hazelnut butter is unique that almost replicated hints of Nutella to form a hybrid flavored base. The toasty notes are present and the creaminess from the hazelnut butter is noticed as the base starts to temper. The richness is present but could be stronger to give you that pure Nutella vibe. I personally enjoyed this base as it had a 70/30 ratio of hazelnut butter to coconut, which played into my favor.
The swirls of cloud forest chocolate were hard to pick up on throughout the entire experience. Salt & Straw is very well known for thick and delicious swirls, but this fell short to a ribbon in size. The ribbon of crunchy hardened chocolate really reflects the elevated and serious side of chocolate with very little sweetness and lots of deep intense bitter notes. The vegan Oreos have a softened wafer shell and vanilla notes channeling from a sweet cream filling. There are plenty of specs of vibrant white crème filling throughout the container but I never got more than a crumb of cookie. With having pebble size pieces of Oreos I never got the cookies and cream experience I was hoping for.
Overall the name of this pint raised my eyebrow more than the overall execution. The hazelnut butter aspect is present and did a great job masking the coconut flavor of the vegan base. In a perfect world with larger chunks of oreo's and a thicker swirl, this would be a home run vegan flavor. If you want a top-tier vegan option wait to see Coconut with Petunia’s Salted Caramel Bars return to the Salt and Straw lineup.
