Graeter’s Rocky Road
Graeter's Rocky Road is labeled as "Traditional dutch milk chocolate ice cream with mini marshmallows and roasted, salted and buttered almonds." Graeter's has only used this base in two other flavors before (Dutch Chocolate, and Double Chocolate Chip) both of which I have not reviewed. The mini marshmallows are carried over from S'mores, and we have seen the almonds in Chunky Chunky Hippo and Chocolate Coconut Almond Chocolate Chip. Graeter's continue to find ways to make basic summertime flavors with things they have used in the past. Let us see if this Rocky Road bonus flavor is a kick off to a great summer.
If you have ever had Graeter’s vanilla I rank it one of the best on the market for a standard ice cream. This chocolate is a good step up from what you would find from grocery brands. Right away the density of the ice cream as expected is thick and rich. The flavoring is true to its name with a strong initial taste, and a bold aftertaste that helps enhance the experience. Once the ice cream does start to temper and the creaminess kicks in it reminded me of a melted Hershey chocolate bar. This is not as heavy in chocolate flavor compared to the Dark Chocolate Brownie, but mild to suit those who love milk chocolate.
The mini marshmallows were nice. At first I thought they may be rock hard, but that is not the case. They were soft, moist, and had a great enrichment to them. It almost reminded me of the Gelato Fiasco marshmallows with how they melted in your mouth. The roasted, salted, and buttered almonds provide the extra icing on the cake due to the saltiness. Salt enhances anything with flavor and the added crunch gives you the perfect example of a true rocky road replica. The almonds are not very big in size (almost like shards) that are broken up during the french pot process. The buttery aftertaste is subtle, but just enough to get that aspect when in conjunction with the big picture.
Graeter's starts off the summer strong with a great rocky road flavor. The ice cream base took me by surprise, and the two mix-ins paired well when put together. If you have a scoop shop by you I would suggest grabbing a scoop or two, and if not order online or miss out!
