Graeters Dark Chocolate Fudge Brownie
Graeters Dark Chocolate Fudge Brownie is labeled as "dark chocolate ice cream featuring deliciously gooey fudge brownie pieces." If you know Graeter's they do not get fancy with product descriptions and mix-ins, but are known for high quality ice cream. With a french pot processing method to create their ice cream their signature chocolate chips and mix-ins have amazing quality. There are not many dark chocolate flavors on their lineup, nor do they use brownies often. With that said lets put two foreign aspects into a Graeter's ice cream and see what this limited edition bonus flavor has to offer.
The dark chocolate ice cream is identical to fudge in flavor. You would think with a dark chocolate ice cream there may be some bitterness in the aftertaste, but that is not the case here. A friend of mine from columbus referred to this base as a fudgesicle which is pretty accurate. Combine a milk chocolate ice cream, and enhance it with the richness of fudge and that is the best way to put this base into words. I absolutely enjoyed it, but for those who wanted a true dark chocolate flavor it has more of a twist to it then just dark chocolate.
The fudge brownies are dynamite in this flavor. At first I was skeptical because brownies are not a refined mix-in Graeter's puts in their icecream. Therefore I had my doubts on quality and quantity that would be included. The brownies were a close resemblance to Greyston Bakery brownies found in Ben & Jerry's ice cream. The brownies were soft, chewy, and dense in flavor that they meshed right into the ice cream. The fudge flavor of the base compliments the brownies absolutely perfectly to give you a stronger and bolder flavor. When they put both of these aspects together everything just works and comes out flawless.
When I visited the scoop shop in Pittsburgh I got one scoop to try out (after sampling). One scoop or a sample can never justify a true flavor. Ice cream sometimes needs a half pint or more to justify a proper review. The further you dig into a pint, is when swirls and mix-ins may be more noticeable. After breaching the surface it is always fair game to seeing what lies underneath. Based off my single serving and scoop I would of given this a B grade. I decided to get 4 scoops with me to go to get a full pint worth (since they can not hand pack bonus flavors or special flavors in stores).
Grade: B+
