Salt & Straw Coconut with Petunia’s Salted Caramel Bars
Salt & Straw Coconut with Petunia’s Salted Caramel Bars is labeled as "This ultra-creamy coconut ice cream is drizzled with dreamy caramel, dotted with housemade chocolate ganache, and studded with chunks of salted caramel bars from Portland’s Petunia’s Pies and Pastries." Salt & Straw served from June 2014 to February 2015, this vegan and gluten-free favorite kicked off perennial partnerships with the local allergy-friendly bakeshop, but this original is one of our most requested flavors year round. With that being said for the month of March in 2017 they brought back the most requested flavors.
The base is pretty similar to the Cookie and Cream pint I did just visit that was a vegan flavor. Even though these are vegan flavors you still get a very rich, creamy, and dense base. While it may temper and melt faster then a usual S&S Flavor the quality and amount of flavor does not disappoint. Being a guy that does not enjoy a strong coconut flavor the amount is subtle and manageable. Once you crack the surface you will soon find why its hard to recognize the base from what S&S offers inside this pint.
In this pint there are swirls of caramel, a chocolate ganache, and salted caramel bars. The further I dug I was a bit upset that I barley got any chocolate bars. My friend who got to visit the shop in California said these were to die for in shop as a standalone, and I see why after getting a few in my pint. The outer layer provides a crunch, bold in chocolate flavor, and packs a nice texture to compliment the creaminess of the ice cream. Do not get me wrong the star of the show is the caramel swirl. Not only is this a swirl, but it got so large I was eating chunks of this towards the bottom. The overall richness, sweetness, and taste is one of the best caramel's I have ever had. It almost made me think of 2nd Street's Copper Kettle Caramel which was one of my all time favorites.
The fans voted for this to come back, and I see why. I stayed away from this last march in 2016 due to not being a major coconut fan. I made a big mistake and should of got multiple pints of it. The base is fantastic and even though it is vegan and provides a flavor not on my priority list I enjoyed it the further I dug down. The caramel swirl was absolutely perfect, but I did not get much as far as chocolate ganache or salted caramel bars go. With that said I knocked off a few points to a flavor that was right up there with one of S&S's best especially being vegan.
