Salt & Straw Petunia’s Cookies & Cream with Raspberry Swirl
Salt & Straw Petunia’s Cookies & Cream with Raspberry Swirl is labeled as "vegan, gluten-free, nut-free, non-nothin-but-delicious homemade oreo's in our cold scooped, full fat, coconut-based ice cream." Even with that description by S&S they left out one of the main features being the raspberry swirl. For someone who loves cookies, and stuffed cookies (like oreo's) I had very high hopes. I have done my research and saw some positive reviews for this one, so on my March order I had to toss this one in.
First of all this is a vegan ice cream. For some people that is a major turn off, and I have only had a few cases of eating an actual vegan frozen dessert. While this is not as premium as their regular lineup the consistency and texture is very creamy. The base is extra dense due to being a vegan ice cream. The base has a mixture of sweet cream and a coconut aftertaste. The sweet cream is to resemble the inside of a stuffed cookie (Oreo) and the coconut from the vegan base. Being a person who is not a big coconut fan I could barley tell it was there which is a win! It almost reminded me of Salt & Straw's fantastic vanilla base with a luscious aftertaste and the sweetness associated with the filling of an oreo.
Now onto the mix-ins being the homemade oreo's and raspberry swirl. If you know S&S their stuff is made in house, they do not go out to the store and buy oreo's and hand pack them into their ice cream. For companies who take the time and effort to go the extra step you can clearly see the quality when you bite into them. The outside chocolate shell has a very crunchy texture and the flavoring is spot on as you would expect. You get exactly what you want a crispy outside shell, a thick sweet cream filling, and an oreo that is light years above what you buy in a store, and quite frankly better then Ample Hills cookie mix-ins. The Raspberry swirl is killer as expected. S&S has never shortchanged me on a swirl before as they get bigger the further you dig. The raspberry flavoring is potent and super rich. It is like they took fresh raspberries and smashed them in house and enhanced them with sweeteners. The swirl is not overpowering to the point where it takes away from the base and mix-ins, but gives you just enough flavor to compliment everything perfectly.
Well executed, fantastic mix-ins, and a great swirl. S&S is on point with the quality on this pint. Being a vegan flavor I would give it a 10/10 on the vegan scale for people who just want to invest in vegan products. Overall I would say this is not a blow away flavor off the original lineup, but something someone should try if they love stuffed cookies in general. I would give this a 8.5/10 on a regular ice cream scale. None the less I was very impressed.
