Clementine's Baklava
Clementine's Baklava is labeled as "Baklava ice cream with homemade baklava pieces." If you are unfamiliar with Baklava it is a dessert originating in the Middle East made of phyllo pastry filled with chopped nuts and soaked in honey. It is also something you do see at many local bakeries, but may be overlooked. Seeing I have never had a Baklava Ice cream or one with Baklava mix-ins this will be a first time experience.
This base really took me by surprise. You get two dominant flavors that in a rich buttery initial taste, and a long lasting honey aftertaste. Since Baklava is a very sweet dessert layered with nuts and soaked in honey this makes sense. As we know from all my reviews the ice cream thickness resembles custard, and is made with 18% buttermilk fat, so the flavoring is on point. The creaminess and texture is what seperates this base ice cream from a lot of the brands on the market. It does not melt fast, its rich, and packs a bold flavor. If you have ever had Baklava this is a damn near replica just off the ice cream alone.
Baklava as I explained above, and what it is, is found all throughout this pint. Clementine's is known for putting a lot of their mix-ins on top, but that is not the case in this pint. The consistency in this pint was unlike the rest as mix-ins were scattered top to bottom. The pieces are still very rich, soft, and have a chewy compliment taste to the rich ice cream base. There are small crunches of the nuts that are scattered in the house made baklava pieces, but you get the extra luscious richness of the honey in each and every mix-in. Wow this pint had a ton of flavor and was delicious.
For a first time Baklava experience I was extremely happy with what clementine's brought to the table. Every part of this ice cream matched the dessert to a T. The ice cream I do not need to rave over anymore, I find it one of the best on the market and similar to custard in flavor. The mix-ins were as expected. Go to a bakery and get a fresh piece of baklava and yet it was still that fresh frozen into this ice cream. Sadly this is a limited flavor, so you may not be able to get your hands on it. My pint looked a little frosted because it was the last pint of this seasonal run. It did tarnish the quality a bit, but none the less a great scoop.
