Little G's Snack Attack
Little G's Snack Attack is labeled as "Vanilla bean ice cream & crispy caramelized snack mix of pretzels, potato chips, butter crackers, peanut butter cups, & candy coated chocolate"
Right away this gives you a glimpse of Ample Hills "The Munchies" which was one of my favorite pints. Not only because I love an assortment of mix-ins, but love mix-ins in general. Throw together everyone's favorite candies and loaded into a vanilla bean ice cream. Lets see how it stacks against one of Ample Hills finest flavors.
First of all the vanilla bean ice cream is exactly what you would think. Ever drink a vanilla bean coffee creamer? Yeah that is exactly what Little G's brings to the table. The base is not super sweet or luscious like a Graeter's ice cream, but has a dense vanilla flavor. For those who like a strong vanilla and not sweet this is right up your alley. Besides breaching the surface and getting ice cream you are then loaded with nothing but mix-ins. As you dwindle down the pint you get more of 80% mix-ins and 20% ice cream as its hard to detail the flavor of the base once you strike gold. Little G's Vanilla bean is good, I would put it up there as a good base, not great. The only thing I would downgrade is how fast the ice cream does temper and melt. Some flavors of Ample Hills are guilty of this as well. With super premium ice creams like Salt & Straw they will hold for quite some time before tempering and staying denser in texture.
Next up on the review is the mix-ins offered in Snack Attack. The ice cream is dominated with candy coated chocolate as the primary mix-in (at least with my experience). The one thing that did not stick out much to me were the potato chips or butter crackers. I had maybe 2 peanut butter cups (not like chocolate peanut butter cup), and a handful of pretzels. With so many mix-ins its very hard to really pin point exactly what your eating because your spoon is laced with so much flavor. One thing I can say is that each mix-in has lots of flavors, and nothing was rock hard. The pretzels provided a very crunchy texture just like the butter crackers and potato chips (both of which were hit or miss) I did encounter. The peanut butter cups and candy coated pieces do melt in your mouth.
If you love the combination of sweet and salty this will be a flavor to include on your Little G's order. While the base is not super sweet, the vanilla is bolder in flavor like a true vanilla bean coffee creamer. Besides how fast the ice cream base does temper the amount of mix-ins help hold the texture as you scoop your way through the pint. For anyone who enjoys a plethora of candy you are in for a true treat. If I were to compare this to AH the Munchies I would give AH the upper hand by a slight margin. Ample Hills has a pretzel infused flavor for their base ice cream, and also has a thicker texture throughout the entire experience.
