Salt & Straw Sauvie Island Grapes PB&J
Salt & Straw Sauvie Island Grapes PB&J is labeled as "A vanilla based ice cream with a swirl of liquid peanut butter, crunchy bite-sized bits of homemade pb cereal and lovely, massive globs of homemade grape jelly." Most people who read that or have had the Ben & Jerry "A Swirled of Difference" may think these flavors are very similar in aspect. After watching a video review, and seeing some pictures of this pint I beg to differ. These swirls from what I have seen may surmount the size of Turkey Hill quarts packed into a Salt & Straw pint. I am hoping I dig as much gold as my friends have because this should be nothing short of an epic experience for a PB&J Lover.
Right away the first few bites are nothing but the base. As always the surface never really includes a whole lot of mix-ins. Then again this pint is pretty basic with just swirls and some crunchy size bites of PB Cereal. Salt & Straw's vanilla base is still nothing to write off. Salt & Straw is known for premium ice cream, very high quality, and making everything in house. The pure richness and luscious flavor of the vanilla is one of the best on the market. The pure sweetness of the vanilla is on point, and leaves the option of throwing anything in a pint to make it a fantastic experience.
Now lets get to the real star of the show. They may be labeled as Peanut butter and Jelly swirls, but that is being nice. Nearly 4-5 bites in you soon strike gold of jelly and peanut butter sightings. It is very similar to rocky road where you start to get a swirl that stretches from side to side. It got to the point where I was eating globs of peanut butter and jelly, and the ice cream was non existent. The peanut butter provdies a subtle salty aftertaste, while the grape jelly is pure, dense, and delicious. The combination easily blows away and PB&J Pint I have had in the past. Ben & Jerrie's seems like local brand new ice cream compared to the quality Salt & Straw provides. After about half way through I would say you get about 80% swirl and 20% ice cream. Salt and Straw brought their A game on this one.
Not only is this paradise for PB&J Lovers, but the quality of the peanut butter, ice cream, and jelly combination is the best I have had. Thick swirls coating from top to bottom is a trademark as S&S provides incredible consistency from pint to pint. I have nothing bad to say about this. If you like PB & J this is easily a must get next year in November. Do not sleep on this and buy multiple pints in your 5 pack.
