Salt & Straw Oregon Honeyed Rocky Road
Salt & Straw Oregon Honeyed Rocky Road is labeled as "We start with the darkest, richest, silkiest chocolate ice cream we could possibly make. The studs of candied Oregon hazelnuts and a delicate honey marshmallow fluff." Salt and Straw has been known to provide very high quality ingredients, and pack massive swirls into their pints. After seeing a few reviews on this flavor the Swirl reminded me of seeing a Turkey Hill size. What I want to know is how dense and flavorful the nuts will be packed into a very good chocolate base loaded with marshmallow.
Just like the last pint I had of of chocolate brownie the chocolate base is not very different. Similar to triple chocolate cheerio its a very dark, rich, and dense milk chocolate. As stated it does not match the old Jeni's chocolate base, but it is a top tier chocolate on the ice cream market. Salt & Straw is known for top notch quality and thick ice cream similar to custard in texture. If you are a chocolate fan, Salt & Straw is a must try. There base gets a good rating, and with high quality ingredients there is a reason why.
The real star of the show was the marshmallow fluff swirl. I was actually blown away with this because it literally stretched across the entire pint. After digging in about 5 or 6 bites I struck gold. When I mean gold, this was over an inch in diameter and full of rich, thick, and luscious flavor. The marshmallow flavoring was not "Fluff" like in texture as it was a bit harder then normal. That did not bother me as I like my ice cream on the thicker side, and the same with my swirls. The marshmallow swirl reminded me of the Wegmans S'mores ice cream base which is one of my favorite ice creams on the market. Not only was the flavor on point, the consistency and thickness of the swirl was absolutely incredible. The amount of candied hazelnuts were minimal in my experience. I maybe had 6 at most, but the texture, flavor, and crunch were delicious.
Salt and Straw struck gold with this pint. Not only is the chocolate base on point, the swirl took this pint over the top. I wish there was more consistency with the candied hazelnuts, but beggars can't be choosers. I would highly suggest this pint if they offer it again next year as I was very pleased from first bite to last. There is not too much bad I can say about this pint. Rocky Road was a solid pickup, as was some of the other flavors in the fall pack offered. Lets see what the Coffee & PB&J have to offer!
