Ample Hills' Mr. Fox's Scrumdiddlyumptious Crunchy Cider Caramel
Ample Hills' Mr. Fox's Scrumdiddlyumptious Crunchy Cider Caramel is labeled as "Sweet cream ice cream with swirls of apple cider caramel and housemade ginger nutmeg molasses cookies." Ample Hills is known for their limited flavors as they roll out new ones every single month. The only downside is they release one at a time in most cases. Making you order a 4-5 pack pint just to grab them. Which for some is extra ice cream in the freezer, and for others they just want the single pint. Either way when you think of fall molasses cookies and apple cider go hand in hand. Ample hills decided to put them together with a sweet cream base. Lets see just how good it is.
If you ask me the sweet cream base from Ample Hills is a step up from their basic vanilla. The enhanced richness of the sweet cream and buttermilk fat added in the base give it a thicker consistency and richer texture. Not only that the density of the ice cream is pure. Some flavors off the AH line melt very fast and I mean within 5 minutes of popping the lid the outside edges are melting. This flavor held up pretty strong, and the flavor was fantastic. This reminded me of the base from Ultimate Oreo from Chocolate Shoppe with how good the filling of an oreo is. Ample Hills when it comes to flavor is no joke, and this is a reason why I continue to preach how good this brand truly is.
Next up are the swirls of apple cider and house made ginger nutmeg molasses cookies. If you ask me the pint was more 90% cookies and 10% swirl. The swirl was almost next to nothing as you plowed through the pint. The cookies on the other hand reminded me of Graeter's signature chocolate chips. Loaded in each and every spoonful as you would expect from Ample Hills. Their consistency with mix-ins is fantastic for being hand packed pints. Its hard to find a bad pint which does happen every now and then. The cookies are extremly soft, moist, and chewy. They also pack the added brown sugar and molasses flavor in every bite. This compliments a sweet cream base very well. The cookies are virtually chunks throughout the entire pint as each spoonful never goes left unattended with mix-ins. The ginger flavor is a mere aftertaste compared to the nutmeg, molasses, and spikes of brown sugar that pop through in the flavor department. Cookies are a job well done, the swirl on the other hand it was basically non-existent.
As I have seen in some flavors (Ben & Jerry's Pecan Sticky Buns with the cream cheese swirl, this one, and the latest B&J Cake flavor that showed no swirl in many reviews) sometimes with no swirl left out the description does not match the label. While that is a bit disappointing the apple cider caramel swirl would be epic with those cookies. IT may have been laced somehow into the base, but I really did not find it. Besides that I have 0 complains about the cookies and base. Both were top notch as expected from Ample Hills. The only downside is I have to downgrade the score a touch. Overall a great seasonal pickup. If you love molasses cookies you will thoroughly enjoy this pint.
