Ample Hills The Eye Opener
Ample Hills The Eye Opener is labeled as "Coffee ice cream with housemade coffee brownies and chocolate-covered espresso-infused toffee pieces". Personally I am a diehard coffee guy. Anything with coffee I will most likely give a shot regardless of the mix-ins or what the product has to offer. Since Ample Hills has two flavors with coffee I had to grab both of them since they are limited. This flavor did not last long on their webpage, thankfully I got to get an order in before it was gone.
Right away the coffee ice cream is a lighter/blonde roast in flavor. While it is not the darkest and richest coffee I am fine with that because I do not prefer darker coffee. The creaminess of the dense premium ice cream and the flavor of the coffee go hand in hand really well. The flavoring is a step up from the NO Cafe Au Lait pint I had quite a while back as a new orleans cold brew. Just picture that tasting a bit stronger and carrying a similar flavor vibe. Ample Hills did a great job on the coffee base which surpasses Ben & Jerry's as well in coffee coffee buzz buzz.
The Brownies & Toffee pieces were the steal of the show. Ample hills makes the mix-ins in house and you can tell by the quality they provide. Each piece is very soft, moist, and extremely chewy. Its incredible how the quality of these mix-ins continue to keep their regular state like you would grab one at the supermarket or a bakery. On the other hand the espresso infused toffee pieces give you a nice crunch to compliment the soft brownies. There is a slight aftertaste of espresso but you get a nice gel of caramel on the inside of the toffee pieces. Really a remarkable flavor I almost pictured this to kind of replicate It Came from Gowanus with a small variation in the coffee base, but it did not touch Gowanus as the all time best flavor off AH.
Great flavor, and really hit the spot on my taste buds. First I love coffee and this base was very good. I have not had Salt & Straw's coffee yet, but I imagine this may rival it for the best coffee base out there next to Jeni's Black Cat Espresso which used real beans from Chicago. The mix-ins were consistent from top to bottom. It amazes me how well Ample Hills makes these in-house and continues to keep them extremely fresh and prevent them from getting rock hard even in an ice cream. If you enjoy coffee, and liked It Came from Gowanus, you should venture this path even though it excludes the crack cookies which is the GOAT mix-in from Ample Hills.
