Fiasco Gelato is based out of Calgary, Alberta up in Canada. As their name implies they specialize in gelato. I placed a large order just after the holidays from Fiasco Gelato. Even though I had never tried any of their gelato from the company, I took the risk based on the favourable reviews I read.
I have dug into a few of their pints (Peanut Butter, Chocolate Peppermint, Sticky Ginger Pudding) from my order and have been very impressed so I decided to share my experience with the next one - Sugar Plum & Pear Sorbetto. The Sugar Plum & Pear was produced as part of their special 2015 holiday series.
Sorbetto is a frozen mixture of sweetened water with flavouring that typically comes from fruit juice or puree. Since the sorbetto base consists of water and fruit there is no fat content. Due to the lack of fat the FG Sugar Plum & Pear Sorbetto has a relatively low calorie count, 120 cals x 4 servings. For that reason, sorbetto is a little bit harder than typical gelato so I let this sit for about 10-15 mins before digging in.
As you can see from the picture above the sorbetto has a pinkish hue from the fruits that were used. From the first spoonful you get an intense fruity flavour that sets the tone for the entire pint. Surprisingly, the sorbetto base is not overly sweet and does not become monotonous as you work your way down. However, unlike some of the other offerings from FG, such as Sticky Ginger Pudding, there are no mix-ins in the Sugar Plum & Pear Sorbetto. Although, I enjoyed the flavourful base I think it would have been on another level with crushed snickerdoodle cookies.
Given the lack of mixins I would rate this pint a B. With the unique flavours and high quality you get from Fiasco Gelato I will definitely purchasing more and I would recommend it to all Sorbetto and Gelato lovers.
