Ample Hills The Dark Side:
Ample Hills The Dark Side is labeled as "An ultra-dark chocolate ice cream with espresso fudge brownies, cocoa crispies, and white chocolate pearls". It is not everyday you see ice cream with cocoa crispies or white chocolate pearls. Both mix-ins really caught my eye above the average brownie. Ample Hills is known for thinking outside the box to make unique flavors. When the Star Wars flavors came out both of them got good reviews. Now it is my time to see what side of the force I am on.[
The ultra dark chocolate ice cream was impressively rich and complemented the espresso flavor to create a delicious base. While most typical chocolate ice creams have a bland taste to them, this flavored tasted like an ultra-rich swiss chocolate. The ultra dark chocolate ice cream is far from ultra dark, but has elements that resemble an upgraded dark chocolate base from Ben & Jerry's. How Ample Hills makes a very soft, creamy, and rich tasting premium ice cream is unique. While the flavor is strong it provides a great start to the pint.
For this pint I hate to say it, but I was left with next to no mix-ins Throughout the entire pint I never crossed a single white chocolate pearl, or a cocoa crispie. This had to of been a bad pint. I did not strike a brownie until about 3/4th of the way through. While the texture is chewy, moist, and full of flavor. Being a white chocolate fan I would of loved to experience the white chocolate pearls. From a few reviews they were hit or miss, but would compliment the chocolate base to give it a good balance.
Overall The Dark Side is a chocolate lovers dream. The base ice cream is a unique spin off a dark chocolate with a swiss chocolate hint to it. Very unique, and of course Ample Hills thinking outside the box. I have to give this a very low score because I got next to nothing for mix-ins. While a single brownie was delicious. This will not live up to Ample Hills consistency we are use to with mix-ins. For most cases from top to bottom you experience mix-ins in almost every spoonful. Unfortunately bad pints do happen, and with that said it will get a bad score even with an incredible base.
