Jeni's Smoked Cassia Cinnamon
After getting in on a very good Cyber Monday deal which left me with a free pint of Jeni's Ice Cream and a flavor that was only made in 100 pints there was no way I could pass up some premium and exquisite ice cream! Today's pint is one that many will not ever try, and with that said I was eager to see what Jeni's could offer being a big time fan whenever I do visit columbus. After grabbing 5 pints for Cyber Monday I left no time in cracking the LE Flavor.
A small note that came with the order labeled this about the new flavor "Smoked Cassia Cinnamon ice Cream reminds you of a cinnamon roll with a side of smoky bacon that exclusive ice crams' star is East Asian Cassie Cinnamon, which is smoked with care by chef and spice blender Lior Lev Sercarz of La Boite in NYC"
After cracking the pint I was presented with a very light vanilla like looking base, but after reading the description on the note about the pint it made sense because if you ever notice cinnamon roll's they are very light in appearance as far at other flavors of ice cream go as well. Think about Cinnamon Buns by Ben & Jerry's and how light that base is, this was very similar in appearance. The calories are not too bad either clocking in around 250 kcals a serving (15g of fat, 24g of carbs, and 5g of protein a serving)
Upon first bite I was a bit thrown off to be honest, I have never had a cinnamon roll and bacon combination before in my life! The first inital burst is more of a very strong and smoky bacon that is like having fresh bacon right off the grill, and then you get the big rush of a cinnamon roll after taste. You do not taste the buttery aspect of a cinnamon roll, more the glaze of the cinnamon roll in every bite with the very overpowering smoky bacon flavoring. This was honestly something that took a few bites to get used to because it was so unique to my taste buds. While Bacon is something I do enjoy, Jeni's blew it away with a very strong and bold bacon taste and a cinnamon roll after taste.
Overall Jeni's took a stab in the dark with a limited edition flavor mixing a smoky bacon with a cassia cinnamon made from East Asian cassia cinnamon, and in the end they got a very unique flavor. The overall base is very strong with the smoky bacon flavor, and leaves you with a lingering cinnamon roll glaze after taste in nearly every bite. You do not taste a buttery kind of aspect when it comes to the cinnamon roll, you get nothing but the glaze that would melt in your mouth. The Smoky Bacon is a good 60%/40% dominance in flavor when it comes to each bite you do take in the ice cream. At first it may throw you off, but as you continue to eat a few more spoonfuls this does grow on you and becomes very pleasant. Since this was totally new to me it threw me off guard at first, but soon became very enjoyable. Jeni's is not known for massive Graeter size mix-ins (which I am a mix-in Junkie), but the base and aftertaste alone is worth a scoop if they ever produce this in stores instead of just available on the 2014 Cyber Monday Deal.
