Private Select HuckleBerry Pie
After touring to Columbus for a trip to visit buddies I got the chance to stock up on Private Select Ice Cream after reading tons of good reviews. Not only is good ice cream hard to come by, but when it is on sale for 1.70$ a pint I had to walk away with at least 6 pints of various flavors. The first i wanted to crack was Huckleberry Pie because I had the opportunity of trying fresh Huckleberry Ice Cream when i was in Montana/Idaho/Wyoming over the summer at a cousins wedding. Now how would this Truly Compare?
Upon Popping the lid you see the fine looking Huckleberry base and there are massive Pie looking Pieces. The description off the main website is as follows: "Crumb-Topped Huckleberry Pie Ice Cream bursts with the bright, fresh flavor of Idaho's famous fruit, the huckleberry. It's like having a bite of prize-winning hucklberry pie a la mode". Now I have had fresh huckleberry so to see if this comes close would be a major say from a Kroger based ice cream.
Upon first bite the Huckleberry has a very sweet and everlasting taste. Very similar to that of a fresh huckleberry like I got when i was on vacation right from the source where they blended them right in front of your eyes in Vector. The sweet and lingering after taste is very close to a true huckleberry which is like a blend of berries (Strawberry/Blueberry) with a nice crisp after taste. After digging into that fire bite I also got a massive chuck of a Graham Cracker / Pie kind of crust that had a nice soft texture that gave it a great compliment.
Overall this is a solid pint, not to mention it only cracks in at 210 kcals a serving which I found is pretty typical for Private select not a very kcal dense offering. The overall base is superb, its not cream of the crop like I had when I was it from the original place who made Huckleberry Ice cream, but it is pretty close and gives it a good replication. A very sweet and dense huckleberry flavor, with amazing Pie/Graham Cracker Pie Crust Pieces that give it the perfect compliment in this offering. If you like Huckleberry or never have tried it this is a unique fruit and if you ever venture out west you may fall in love wit it because they put it into truffles, ice cream sandwiches, and also milkshakes that are to die for. I highly suggest this offering if you have never tried a huckleberry and are a fan of strawberries or blueberries or a mixture of both.
