Caffe Panna Chunky Velvet
CaffePanna's goal is to bring that same welcoming spirit and all-day accessibility to the heart of New York City, with an emphasis on delicious ice cream that marries elements of both Italian and American traditions.
Chunky Velvet is labeled as " Coconutty cream cheese ice cream made with coconut cream and flecked with shards of Amano chocolate for a cocoa punch, plus Red Velvet chunks from our friends at Blondery and — maybe our favorite house mixin here at Caffè Panna — candied pecans."
Coconut is a double edge sword when it comes to flavor. Some people love it while others don’t care for it. Caffe Panna found a way to make this base enjoyable even for myself who is not a Coconut fan. The coconut ice cream is incredibly dense, creamy, and provides the correct amount of nuttiness. The base provides the accepted ratio of sweetness to allow the toasted flavor to shine.
The Amano Chocolate Shards is a collaboration CaffePanna does. Amano Chocolate is found in Chuao on the Caribbean coast of Venezuela. The richness and bitterness of the dark chocolate are noted, but the amount of flavor it produces is surreal. The small flecks are noted, but too small to really pick out with the other mix-ins The red velvet chunks are the best part of this ice cream. The chewy, moist, and thick cake pieces provide the cocoa enhancement you would expect from a red velvet cake. The candied pecans are large and have the correct sugary syrup to give them an extra bit of pop.
I am not the largest fan of nuts in ice cream and coconut. Based on that this is why I rated this flavor the way it is. For those who enjoy both, you will have a higher outlook based on what is presented. The collaboration with Blondery is a phenomenal mix-in that I hope to see in the future with milk chocolate or vanilla base.
