Caffe Panna Our Favorite
CaffePanna's goal is to bring that same welcoming spirit and all-day accessibility to the heart of New York City, with an emphasis on delicious ice cream that marries elements of both Italian and American traditions.
Our Favorite is labeled as "Mascarpone ice cream kissed with cooked down market Concord grapes with pear compote swirled throughout. Sprinkle Graham Crunch on top of this one!"
Mascarpone is used in many Italian desserts that contain coffee or chocolate. The rich, buttery texture comes from the high butterfat content (up to 75 percent), which is why it is used as a filling for the actual cannoli pastry. or used as a filling for real cannoli's. It is a cream cheese. It is also seen in Tiramisu, since the ingredient is used in many Italian coffee and chocolate desserts. The base Mascarpone Ice Cream is creamy, dense, and luscious in flavor.
The graham crunch is a Caffe Panna special. The combination of butter, sugar, graham crackers and salt is all that is needed to make this masterpiece. The extra hint of salt from the graham crunch amplifies the swirls to make it stand out even more. The most unique aspect of this was the pear and concord grape swirl. The hybrid swirl is a very unrefined taste to my pallet. The grape was hard to find as it was overpowered by the pear compote. The pear has an everlasting sweetness in each and every bite. Pears tend to be more sweet than sour, but the combination of both was heavily in favor of pear.
The duo of grape and pear really threw my taste buds off as I have never had a pear swirl in ice cream before. The Mascarpone ice cream is stellar, and the graham crunch is a Caffe Panna staple. With an increased amount of graham inclusion and grape swirl this could of have a better grade. Perhaps I got let down with the amount in my experience compared to others.
