Ow Wow Cow Mayhem
Ow Wow Cow Mayhem is labeled as "Black cocoa ice cream with caramel, fudge, chocolate chips, house-made midnight cookies, mayhem, and fun." This is a special for the month of October at Ow Wow Cow. Ow Wow Cow is a very famous place in New Jersey for ice cream, and every-time I am in town I do not miss out. The other monthly specials are Pumpkin Smash, Mischief, and magic pop.
The black cocoa ice cream is unique chocolate base that has a multitude of flavors. Black cocoa powder is simply a cocoa powder that has been heavily alkalised. Black cocoa powder has smoother non-bitter taste, and I think it actually tastes much less chocolate like. The way this ice cream stands out is picking up hints of milk and dark chocolate in the backend making it hit your taste buds from many angles. While Ow Wow Cow is not the densest ice cream on the market, they do provide an incredibly rich and creamy mouthfeel that has you digging in for seconds in no time.
The mix-ins include caramel, fudge, chocolate chips, and house-made midnight cookies. The fudge and chocolate chips are smashed up pieces spread throughout the pint. Think about fudge flakes from Ben & Jerry's pints that are scattered from top to bottom. While they do not provide a lot texture wise to the ice cream, they enhance the chocolate flavor from the base ice cream. The midnight cookies are large and in charge. The cookies have a similar texture to the outer shell of an oreo wafer. They have a nice crunch and bitter cocoa flavor that plays hand in hand with the ice cream. The midnight cookies are what you would expect from America's favorite cookie. The amplified flavor truly elevates this pint to enhance the experience. The caramel swirl is lacking as it slivers its way around the ice cream. Not once did I get enough to get a grasp on the flavor it provides. If I recall from Caramel Cashew the caramel is fantastic, there was just not enough to get a true experience of the luscious and thick salty flavor it contains.
I really like the concept behind "Mayhem", but a majority of the mix-ins are subpar to give you exactly what is described. The chocolate chips, fudge, and caramel swirl are too minimal to make a true impact. While the midnight cookies were great it was not enough to justify a great flavor. Ow Wow Cow provides a good ice cream, but the overall execution and quality control needs to be improved.
