Ben & Jerry's Chip Happens
Ben & Jerry's Chip Happens is labeled as "A Cold mess of Chocolate Ice Cream with Fudge Chips a Crunchy Potato Chip Swirl". This is the first time we have ever seen a potato chip swirl used in a Ben & Jerry's ice cream. The brand continues to put out unrefined mix-ins and swirls, which bring enticement to the general consumer. For someone who has scooped ice cream for years I am quite interested in the quality associated with a grocery ice cream company. Let's scoop and see how the second Netflix series pint stacks up to the others on the massive lineup.
I for one am not a massive fan of the chocolate base from Ben & Jerry's. Over the years it has always been average at best. The chocolate flavor is present, but doesn't pack the density or richness you mourn for. It’s milkier and lighter with an almost malty undertone, but still nothing that stands out in the industry. Yes this is a grocery pint, and the quality is no where near a top premium brand, but this a weak point for the company. If they could enhance the boldness and amplify the flavor it would truly allow for a greater experience.
The fudge chips are nothing to write home about, just a smaller, more palatable version of B&J’s oft-used fudge flakes. Even though they’re unremarkable in flavor, I appreciate their smaller size, which leads to a softer texture. Not like actual fudge or ganache, but meltier and darker than the milk chocolate-leaning base. The star of the show is the crunchy potato chip swirl. The salty and thick swirl runs consistent from top to bottom in this experience. What boggles my mind is how this swirl doesn't lose potency not being coated or covered in a thick glaze. Take a handful of lay's potato chips, crush them together, and lace it throughout this pint of ice cream. The texture and fried potato flavor pairs very well with the chocolate base.
Overall this was an eye opening experience to show Ben & Jerry's can think outside the box and create new and innovative additions to their ice cream. While I am not a huge fan of the chocolate base or fudge chips this was an enjoyable experience. I would not hesitate to pick this one up again just due to the fact the swirl is remarkable. I hope Ben & Jerry's continues this trend with future Netflix series pints.
