Quince Honey Lemon Tea
Caffè Panna is inspired by the cafes and gelato shops of Rome, which are a ubiquitous part of daily life in the eternal city and serve everyone from Bambini to nonnas. CaffePanna's goal is to bring that same welcoming spirit and all-day accessibility to the heart of New York City, with an emphasis on delicious ice cream that marries elements of both Italian and American traditions. Every Day CaffePanna offers five staple flavors, and five chosen by the kitchen at the particular moment. The menu is always varying, which makes the shop incredibly unique and a must-stop in New York City.
Quince Honey Lemon Tea is labeled as "Black Tea Ice Cream with Quince Honey Swirl". I have never scooped a black tea ice cream before, so this is a first. When I took my first bite I expected it to encompass a dark malted flavor ice cream. To my surprise I could taste a bold nutty undertone on top of a rich, creamy, and enticing tea flavor. While tea is not high on my priority list after scooping this base I may think again.
The Quince Honey swirl is the star of the show. The quince honey has been left to naturally granulate, giving it a thick texture, Combine the fact it is frozen in an ice cream base gives it a strong and distinctive taste with a thick, luscious texture. Whenever honey is thrown into ice cream it tempers incredibly fast, that is not the case here. All the way to my very last bite it holds its texture showing you how high caliber CaffePanna's ingredients are.
I went into this pint with an open mind and enjoyed it a lot more than expected. While this would not be my first choice if I were to visit CaffePanna, I can imagine how there would be a large target market for this. Every single pint I scoop it still amazes me how combinations that are so unique go so well together.
