Ample Hills The Hook (2019)
Ample Hills The Hook is labeled as "burnt sugar ice cream mixed with salty fudge bites and Dutch stroopwafels." This flavor is full of tasty tributes to the history of the neighborhood, from the Dutch immigrants who coined the name “Red Hook” to the Historic Revere Sugar Refinery. Personally I have never had stroopwafels in my ice cream before so this will be a first time experience with an unrefined mix in from the brand.
Burnt sugar by definition is sugar beyond the caramelization point. The term is referred to as a flavor, the reference is to a deep, caramelized flavor, not an actually burnt flavor. When scooping the ice cream it is the dense, thick, and creamy base we all come to know from Ample Hills. The rich, dark-brown, thick, melted liquid, coats the ingredients and adds caramel to the base ice cream with subtle hints of cinnamon in the aftertaste. This is truly a unique offering we have never seen from Ample Hills before.
The salty fudge bites are fudge flake in size similar to the Ben & Jerry's mix-in. I noticed they were chunked up into squares that had an incredibly soft texture and are super moist. The saltiness enhances the burnt sugar base and the deep cocoa vibes associated with the fudge. The Stroopwafels, on the other hand, had a crunchy texture with a flaky outside shell. The cookies propel the flavor of the base with a caramel-like syrup sandwiched the crushed up wafers. At first, I was skeptical of a stroopwafel in ice cream, but the crispy outside shell and soft fudge are a great mix-in duo.
At first I was skeptical with Ample Hills putting a lot of unrefined things into a new limited edition flavor, but to be honest it works. While this is not a top tier pint from the company it truly is enjoyable reaching for something new and finding it to mesh well together. I hope to see this trend continue with the brand and limited edition flavors.
