Ample Hills The Flavor of Record (2019)
The Flavor of Record is labeled as: "sweet cream ice cream mixed with fudge swirls and our housemade black & white cookies". To create a flavor honoring this New York City institution, we drew our inspiration from the history of the city and the paper; one of the most trusted newspapers in America. Since The New York Times printed their first issue on September 18, 1851, they have grown to become a household name: a paper of record. And it’s that rare distinction that inspired us to name our creation, The Flavor of Record
The sweet cream ice cream from Ample Hills is fantastic. Dense, rich, creamy, and packs an everlasting luscious aftertaste. The amount of sweetness and cream blend together very well with a high butterfat content to enhance the flavor. It's not a true oreo cream center like you would picture a sweet cream to be, but think about bold vanilla with a creamy enhancement. While Ample Hill's vanilla is a top tier flavor off their line this one is a step above.
The Fudge swirls were noted right away from popping the lid as they breached the surface. The thickness and density of the swirls truly enhanced this pint as the rich cocoa flavor meshed well with the sweet cream base. There were thick pools of swirls around the sides of the pint that were consistent from top to bottom. The black and white cookies were thick, crunchy, and provided a nice texture. I did not get a buttery undertone like a fresh baked good, but it contained a brownie drop taste that was phenomenal.
Going into this pint I expected this to be the least exciting of the Taste of New York, but I was actually super impressed. Ample Hills sweet cream is one original ice cream bases that paired well with a simple mix in and large swirls. I don't know why Ample HIlls doesn't use swirls more often, but it really makes this one stand out.
