Salt & Straw Birthday Cake & BlackBerries
Birthday Cake & BlackBerries is labeled as " Textured hunks of golden, technicolor-sprinkled birthday cake crumble, jammy evergreen blackberries, and a double-vanilla ice cream that’ll transport you right back to kid birthday parties." This flavor is praised as one of the best the brand offers in the month of July. I have missed out the last few years because I am not a huge berry person, but I pulled the trigger this year in high hopes it delivers.
The double fold vanilla base is a staple from Salt & Straw. It is one of the original flavors they sell in shops and for online ordering. It is also featured in one of my all-time favorites from them "Almond Brittle and Salted Ganache.". There is not much to say here besides how pure the flavor is. The density and creaminess of the base really is vanilla that stands out in the industry. It is not as sweet as Greater's with the luscious aftertaste, but the overall density it provides is like no other on the ice cream market.
What we really came for is the birthday cake and blackberry swirl. The birthday cake pieces were an issue in the past as Tyler the owner of Salt & Straw also stated years ago "This was made by design and was thinking he should have changed the description to "cookie" pieces rather than cake pieces." The pieces were, in fact, crunchy and not the soft and moist birthday cake we are all used to. The mix-ins yield a yellow cake and sweet cream flavor to go hand in hand with the base. When it comes to swirls there is no other on the market like Salt & Straw, and this blackberry swirl is a prime example. Stretching from the base of the ice cream all the way down to the very last spoonful are globs of blackberry jam. You can tell this is fresh, hand-grown berries the company used as the quality is stellar. The ripeness and richness of the swirl overpower the double fold vanilla and steals the show.
Overall this flavor gets a lot of praise and I now see why. The swirl was phenomenal, and the base is stellar for vanilla. I had my doubts biting into crunchy cake pieces, which I would have preferred to be on the soft side, but it is safe to say this one is good to go. If you are ordering for July I highly suggest giving this one a go.
