Graeter’s Pina Colada
Graeter's Pina Colada is labeled as "Coconut ice cream with chunks of pineapple and a hint of rum flavor.” This is Graeter’s 4th Bonus flavor of the summer of 2019. Bonus flavors are being announced every three weeks this summer, culminating with the last announcement on August 5th. A Pina Colada by definition is a sweet cocktail made with rum, cream of coconut or coconut milk, and pineapple juice, usually served either blended or shaken with ice. It may be garnished with either a pineapple wedge, maraschino cherry, or both. How well can Graeter’s pull off this execution in ice cream?
Coconut is a double edge sword when it comes to flavor. Some people love it while others don’t care for it. Graeter’s found a way to make this base enjoyable even for myself who is not a Coconut fan. The coconut ice cream is incredibly dense, creamy, and provides the correct amount of nuttiness. Graeter’s provides the accepted ratio of sweetness to allow the toasted flavor to shine.
For the mix-ins Graeter’s included chunks of pineapple and a hint of rum. The rum is subtle and overpowered by the premium coconut base. I only picked up traces of it into the aftertaste. For those of you who are not drinkers do not be scared as this contains just to give you the alcoholic element of the popular drink. The pineapple chunks were the best part of this ice cream as they were incredibly fresh. Fruit can be tricky with ice cream but these chunks bursted with luscious ripeness.
Overall Graeter’s puts out a bonus flavor that will be very popular doing the summer months. If you love coconut or enjoy the alcoholic beverage this will be your cup of tea. This one took me by surprise, and is my favorite of the bunch put out so far. You can scoop this in shops until August 4th or place an online order and have it shipped to your doorstep!
