Graeter's Amaretto Crunch
Graeter's Amaretto Crunch is labeled as "Creamy, pink, almond flavored ice cream with crushed almond candy inclusion." Amaretto Crunch was a flavor that debuted back in 2005, but with a much different makeup. The 2005 flavor included fresh baked macaroon cookies and crunchy butter toffee pieces compared to the 2019 version with crushed almond candy. Graeter's is known to throw fans a blast from the past with bonus flavors as we have seen over the summers. Let us see how bonus flavor number 2 stacks up compared to Malted Pretzel Ball.
The creamy, pink, and almond flavored ice cream is dense and has an everlasting creamy texture to it. This should come to no surprise for those who scoop Graeter's often they bring a very high buttermilk fat content into their ice cream. The almond flavor has a hybrid sweet cream and vanilla complimenting base that pairs with a subtle salty and flaky aftertaste from the almond inclusion. This reminded me a lot of last year's Pistachio bonus flavor with a slight deviance being the nut they used to compose the base.
The crushed almond candy inclusion is yet another unrefined mix-in to be used in a bonus flavor. The crushed almond candy is made up of crushed almonds, toffee, and sugar. The toffee packs a buttery brown sugar aspect that goes hand in hand with the fresh almonds. As the ice cream tempers the crunchy inclusions play their part with a multitude of different flavors to enhance the almond base. The sweetness is just right as neither the mix-ins or the base overpower each other and give you a fantastic one two punch.
I am usually not a big fan of nutty flavors, but I found this to be refreshing and enjoyable. I like to see Graeter's think outside the box with new mix-ins, and pull back old flavors that debuted over a decade ago. I personally never got to try the 2005 version, but I would like to see Graeter's use more items from their bakery in the future. Graeter's second bonus runs from June 3rd till June 23rd. Once it's gone from scoop shops and out of inventory for online ordering it's gone for good.
