Ben & Jerry's Wake & No Bake Cookie Dough Core
Ben & Jerry's Wake & No Bake Cookie Dough Core is labeled as "Vanilla Ice Cream with peanut butter cookies, peanut butter ice cream with fudge chips, and a no-bake cookie dough core." In the three new core flavors, Ben & Jerry's yet again adds unrefined bases and innovative core flavors. The biggest concern over the years of scooping the core flavors is the lack of quality control with the core reaching the bottom and mix-in consistency. Let us see if Ben & Jerry's latest and greatest flavors can rise to the occasion.
Ben & Jerry's vanilla ice cream is a middle of the road flavor on their lineup. The ice cream itself for grocery is rich and creamy, but the vanilla notes aren't very strong that does not give the flavor any pop. The peanut butter ice cream on the other side of the core is much better. While the peanut butter lacks saltiness and density it still is an upgrade over the vanilla pairing. The combination of the two helps compliment the pint from becoming too peanut butter heavy since it is the stronger of the two options. For Ben & Jerry's to get their vanilla ice cream to work it needs help from dense mix-ins and thick swirls for everything to fall in tandem.
The famous fudge chips are an addition to this flavor such as the chocolate chip cookie dough core pint. The extra hint of chocolate does pair well with the peanut butter base but is so minimal that the swirl and peanut butter cookies pave way for stealing the show. The peanut butter cookies are a crunchy addition that amplifies the subtle vanilla base. While I prefer soft and chewy cookies these small chunks give a nice bite that plays hand in hand with the no-bake core. The thick chocolate no-bake cookie core elevates a strong, rich, fudge density of chocolate. As I scooped just the core alone it had multiple aspects that reminded me of boom chocolate cookie core with an added oatmeal inclusion.
As the core does dwindle from one side to the center, yet again the core was almost non-existent by the midway point. This seems to be an ongoing issue I have with the core series as I continue to scoop the new flavors. For fans that have had Peanut Butter Half Baked in the past, this is very similar. Substitute out the peanut butter cookie dough with crunchy cookies and it is not far off.
