Graeter's Chunky Chunky Hippo
Graeter's Chunky Chunky Hippo is labeled as "Toffee ice cream base, salted roasted peanuts, and milk chocolate caramel truffles". This flavor was first released in Cincinnati and Dayton area Graeter's store by the scoop only. Now the brand has made it available by the pint and a permanent flavor to the lineup in 2019. Due to the increasing demand for this flavor and how it supported a great cause for the Cincinnati Zoo this quickly became a fan favorite.
The toffee ice cream is very similar to the toffee chocolate chip flavor off the Original Graeter's line. Graeter's takes their luscious vanilla and combines heath bars to form their toffee base. This ice cream packs a punch and the density of the Graeter's ice cream just enhances the flavoring. If you love Heath Bars or a chocolate nut combo for a base flavor this is spot on!
The salted peanuts are in abundance throughout my entire experience. They are just like you would buy at a local grocery store, but paired with the perfect amount of salt to elevate the ice cream experience to another level. The star of the show is the milk chocolate caramel clusters. These clusters have a thick glaze of caramel packed inside the center, and a melt in your mouth milk chocolate coating. If you ever had the clusters off the discontinued Gelato line you know exactly what I am talking about. The best way to describe these are the Ghirardelli caramel chocolate squares but just in a round shape. Absolutely delicious!
All in all this was one of my favorite limited edition flavors over the summer of 2017, and I am glad Graeter's have brought it to pints for good. When it debuted in 2017 this was right up there with the S'mores and Oatmeal Raisin bonus flavor that were out for a short stint. Graeter's should really look into using those clusters more often. This would go hand in hand with a lot of their flavors off the original chocolate chip line.
